Chapter 6 - Descriptive Text (Part 1)

A. Definition Of Descriptive Text :

Descriptive text is a text that explains or describes people, animals or things. This explanation or description includes shape, nature, amount, and others.

B. Purpose Of Descriptive Text :

There is only one purpose of descriptive text, namely to describe, represent or express a person or an object, both abstract and concrete.  This is why descriptive text is written in clear and concise language, so that the contents of the text are easy to understand.

C. Structure Of Descriptive Text : 

a.) dentification; A general description of a topic, this section is usually in the first paragraph.

b.) Description; An explanation containing the special characteristics of the thing, place, or person being described.

D. Language Feature Of Descriptive Text :

• Specific participant; has a certain object, not general and unique (there is only one). 

example: Uncle Jack, Borobudur Temple.

 • Use of adjectives (adjectives) to clarify nouns (nouns). 

Example: a handsome man, a beautiful woman.

 • Use of the simple present tense; The sentence pattern used is the simple present because it tells the facts of the object being described.

 • Action verbs; There are verbs that indicate an activity (the activity can be seen).  

example: run, walk, cut, etc.
