Chapter 7 - Biography (Part 1)

A. Definition Of Biography :

  A biography is a life story of a person that is more complex than just a curriculum vitae and work data.  Generally, biographies tell a deeper story about the feelings faced by someone in dealing with an event or someone's life.

B. Purpose Of Biography :

* To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this person may be known for.

* To give much information easily and educate the readers.

C. Structure Of Biography :

a.) Orientation; contains an introduction by providing information about who, what, where, and when the event or activity occurred in the past.

b.) Events; is a sequence of events that occur, usually presented in chronological order (chronological order) such as, "In the first day, I..., And in the next day..., And In the last day...".

c.) Re-orientation (Conclusion of the text); namely repetition of the introduction that is in the orientation and events that are told.  You could say that this section is the conclusion of the entire text.

D. Features of Biographical Text :

• Filled with facts based on the character's life experiences

• Presented in narrative form

• Tells the important events that the character experienced so that they can serve as role models for readers

E. Types of Biography :

~ Short Biography (focuses only on highlights of a person’s life)

~ Long Biography (about life and times of someone in a lot more detail)
